Dysport® Injectable Overview

Prescription Dysport® injectable is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for temporarily reducing or eliminating moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows. Like BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport is injected directly into the muscle beneath the furrow, weakening it so it cannot contract.

Dysport, also known as Reloxin, is derived from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, the same neurotoxin used in BOTOX Cosmetic.

Applications for Dysport Injectable

Medically, Dysport is used to treat:

  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Symptoms of cervical dystonia, including neck pain and abnormal head position
  • Muscle spasms

Cosmetically, Dysport injections are used to treat:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

Dysport Injectable Procedure and Results

Dysport is injected directly into the facial muscles responsible for lines and furrows using a fine needle. Anesthetic is generally not required, though ice packs or topical creams may be used. Results typically appear within a few days and last up to four months, with longer-lasting effects in regularly treated areas. Injections should only be administered by qualified medical professionals.

Candidates for Dysport Injectable

According to the manufacturer, ideal candidates are adults under 65 seeking temporary improvement of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). Dysport may not be suitable for individuals with:

  • Allergies to Dysport or its ingredients
  • Allergy to cow’s milk protein
  • Surgical facial changes
  • Very weak muscles in the treatment area
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Inflammation or infection at the injection site
  • Droopy eyelids or sagging eyelid folds
  • Deep facial scars
  • Thick, oily skin
  • Wrinkles that cannot be smoothed when spread apart

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, or those with neuromuscular diseases, should not receive Dysport injections.

Differences Between Dysport and BOTOX Cosmetic

Although both products are derived from the same bacterium, anecdotal evidence suggests Dysport may act faster, spread farther, and last longer than BOTOX Cosmetic.

Side Effects of Dysport Injectable

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Normal activities can typically be resumed immediately. Common injection-site effects include:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Occasionally, eyelids may droop when injections are made in the glabellar region, but this typically resolves within three weeks. Side effects of Dysport are similar to those of BOTOX Cosmetic.
