What is JUVÉDERM XC?

JUVÉDERM XC is a smooth-consistency gel that restores volume to the skin and smooths moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring sugar in the body that delivers nutrients, maintains hydration, and cushions the skin. Young, healthy skin contains abundant HA, but aging and sun exposure reduce its levels, leading to loss of structure and volume. JUVÉDERM XC is particularly effective for improving the appearance of nasolabial folds—the lines running from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

JUVÉDERM XC Injectable Gel Procedure

The results of JUVÉDERM XC are visible immediately after injection. Any swelling or bruising can be managed with ice and usually subsides within a few days. Results typically last 6 to 9 months, and in some cases up to a year. According to Allergan, results vary and are temporary; supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be required to maintain optimal correction.

Results of JUVÉDERM XC Injectable Gel

Injections take approximately 15 minutes in a doctor’s office. A fine needle is used to inject the gel under the skin in the targeted area to add volume or smooth wrinkles and folds. Because JUVÉDERM XC contains lidocaine, anesthetic may not be necessary, though a topical anesthetic may be used. The treated area may be gently massaged after the injection. Patients can return to their regular activities with virtually no downtime. For the first 24 hours, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of complications.

Risks of JUVÉDERM XC Injectable Gel

JUVÉDERM XC is generally safe, but side effects may occur, typically limited to the injection site. These include:

  • Redness
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Firmness
  • Swelling
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Bruising
  • Itching
  • Discoloration
  • Infection

Types of JUVÉDERM XC

For customized treatment, Allergan offers two types of JUVÉDERM XC:

  • JUVÉDERM Ultra Plus XC: Stronger formulation for deeper facial folds and lines.

JUVÉDERM XC is also the first HA filler FDA-approved for use on people of color.
