Modern technology provides a variety of successful laser resurfacing treatments to improve the condition of the skin. Laser skin treatments use focused beams of light energy to counteract the effects of acne, aging, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, scars, or poor nutrition. These treatments are safe, efficient, and require little downtime while providing effective results.

Much less invasive than dermabrasion, laser treatments remove damaged skin and rejuvenate the patient’s appearance. While most treatments are performed on the face, other parts of the body may also be treated.

Reasons for Laser Resurfacing

Patients seek laser resurfacing for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Decreasing or eliminating wrinkles or stretchmarks
  • Diminishing the appearance of scars
  • Rejuvenating non-responsive skin after a facelift
  • Removing age spots or spider veins
  • Repairing sun-damaged skin
  • Improving skin tone due to melasma or other causes
  • Removing warts or birthmarks
  • Decreasing the size of enlarged pores
  • Removing tattoos

Types of Laser Resurfacing

There are two basic types of laser resurfacing treatments: ablative and non-ablative.

Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Ablative laser treatments penetrate more deeply and remove a layer of skin, essentially causing a controlled wound. This type provides dramatic results, requires fewer sessions, but has a longer healing period.

Non-Ablative Resurfacing

Non-ablative treatments do not remove skin tissue but use laser energy to stimulate collagen growth and tighten underlying skin. This method is gentler, requires less downtime, but may require more sessions and yield less dramatic results.

Non-ablative treatments are often recommended for less extensive repairs and for people of color to avoid changes in pigmentation.

Fractional Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Fractional ablative laser targets specific regions with microbeams, peeling away smaller areas of skin. This provides noticeable results with less downtime compared to conventional ablative treatments.

The Laser Resurfacing Procedure

Laser treatments are typically performed in a doctor’s office with topical anesthesia. Procedures take 30–90 minutes, depending on the size and location of the treated area. Some patients notice significant results after one treatment, but multiple sessions may be needed, and touch-ups may be required later.

Risks of Laser Resurfacing

Although considered safe, laser resurfacing carries some risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Redness
  • Pigmentation changes
  • Acne
  • Milia (tiny white bumps on the skin)

Recovery from Laser Resurfacing

Recovery varies depending on the procedure and the patient’s skin type. All patients should avoid sun exposure during recovery.

Recovery from Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Patients may experience redness and peeling, typically lasting several days. Ice packs can ease discomfort. Normal activities can usually be resumed, and makeup may be applied to cover signs of treatment.

Recovery from Ablative Laser Resurfacing

Treated skin may appear raw, swollen, and itchy, with yellowish crusts forming. Ointments and watertight dressings are applied, and patients may be instructed to keep the head elevated if the face is treated. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers may be used. Patients should avoid picking at crusts to prevent scarring. Visible healing may take one to two weeks.

During recovery, strenuous activities should be avoided, and the area should be cleaned regularly. Cosmetics can be applied after initial healing to cover residual redness, which may persist for a few months. Once healing is complete, skin appearance is improved in tone, texture, and tightness.
